At an elevation of 8,701 feet, Galena Summit is both a highpoint and a highlight of this section of the beautiful Sawtooth Scenic Byway (regularly voted one of America's best drives), which winds its way through the Sawtooth National Forest. Look out over the Salmon River, 2,000 feet below, and beyond to the jagged ridges of the Sawtooth Mountains that dominate the horizon. The road, which today links Ketchum and Stanley, was first built to provide access to the mines at Vienna and Sawtooth City.
If you go:
The official overlook and parking area is situated about a mile west of the summit itself. Take care in winter - snow can close the road very quickly.
