• Encounter Restaurant and Lounge - Los Angeles, California

The restaurant is at the top of the LAX theme building which was completed in August 1961 at a cost of $2.2 million. It's housed a couple different restaurants but the Encounter was opened in 1997 and features amazing lava lamps and futurist shapes designed by Ed Sotto and Ellen Guevara for Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI).

      If you go:
The restaurant opens at 11:00 am and closes at 9:00 pm. There is a lovely 911 memorial at the front entrance and a garden dedicated to the first employee of the airport. Seated at the bar one can watch arrivals and departures on both of the Main runways at the airport. The bartenders are a font of local information. Great martinis and the bar food is outstanding. NOTE: At the present time (2018) this unique dining option is closed again. But we are leaving this article in place, in case it opens again.

When the Encounter opened, the bartenders wore Star Trek-like antennas. It is still one of the coolest places in LA to sip martinis.
