Bruneau Canyon Overlook - Hot Springs, Idaho

One of Idaho's secret treasures, this massive chasm '1300 ft wide and, in places, 800 ft deep' stretches across the high desert for 67 miles. Stand at the overlook and you look down over a huge void of dark rock, sparse vegetation clinging onto sheer walls and a cold, boulder-strewn river the color of steel far below.

Getting to Bruneau Canyon Overlook involves an 18 mile drive up a road that's half paved, half loose gravel, passes through a USAF bombing range and finishing with a mile or so of dirt track, but it's worth it. Look out for wildlife living in and around the canyon including bighorn sheep, antelope and coyotes.
