• A.K. Shaifer House - Port Gibson, Mississippi

The Battle of Port Gibson during the Vicksburg Campaign of the Civil War began here. The Shaifer house served as Gen. John A. McClernand's headquarters during this battle and as a Union hospital.

      If you go:
Take Hwy 552 (Rodney Road) south from Port Gibson 1.1 mi. Turn left onto Bessie Weathers Road (Magnolia MB Church at the intersection). Travel south on Bessie Weathers Road for 1.3 miles and then turn right onto an unmarked gravel road (Shaifer Road). After 1 mile you will come to the old Magnolia Church historical markers. Continue on for .4 miles to Shaifer House. Road not suitable for RVs. Porta potty in parking lot. Services in nearby Port Gibson.

I am from Arkansas I plan on doing a road trip with friends to Mississippi in July. Vicksburg and Port Gibson (Windsor Ruins) for a visit. I have a couple of questions. I know the roads to the Ruins and the A.K. Shaifer House are a little narrow and are gravel dirt. Will a SUV make it down these roads fine? And have you visited Rodney, Mississippi? I was thinking about adding that to our visit. Any other places we should visit while we are in this area.
        Thanks,
