The best way to tour the hometown of Andy Griffith, the inspiration for his TV town of Mayberry, is in a police car from the period, driven by a knowledgeable and friendly guide. You'll cruise down the picturesque Main Street, past such familiar landmarks as Floyd's Barber Shop (under the same ownership since 1946) and the Snappy Lunch. You'll also see the North Carolina Granite Quarry, the world's largest open quarry and supplier of granite for many landmark buildings for more than a century. And of course you'll see Andy's boyhood home and his former elementary school, now the site of the Andy Griffith Playhouse. The tour lasts about 45 minutes, leaving plenty of time in your day to stroll Main Street at your leisure.

      If you go:
The tour leaves from the gift shop inside the replica of Wally's Service Station. Next to it is a detailed replica of the courthouse/jail set from the TV series. Also be sure to visit the Andy Griffith Museum, which pays tribute not only to him, but also to other local celebrities: Eng and Chang, the original Siamese twins.
