It's no movie prop!

Mark Helmlinger, a physicist at Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, uses the CIMEL Electronique 318A, which is a solar-powered spectral radiometer that measures sunlight. Robotically controlled, it can be pointed directly at the center of the sun, and it can also measure sky radiance.
