The
Storey County Courthouse was a victim in the "Great
Fire of 1875" which destroyed a large section of Virginia City.
Reconstruction began in May, 1876, and work was completed in February,
1877. Still in use, the grand facade of the courthouse bears witness
to Virginia City's glory days.
Maggie
Lowther, Storey County Recorder & Auditor, displays one
of the the Comstock's historic record books. Also
still in use are the documents dating back to Virginia City's
beginnings back in 1859. Although many were destroyed in the
Great Fire, others remain available for title searches and
other research.
Deeds,
maps, mining claims, newspapers and other documents are stored
in the Courthouse vault.
