Washburn, Wisconsin, is located on the western shores
of Chequamegon Bay on Lake Superior. Known as "Monolith
City" for its 115-foot brownstone obelisk that
was cut from a nearby quarry in 1892, at one time
it also boasted the largest dynamite factory in the
world. A number of historic brownstone buildings remain
and can be seen on this
virtual tour.
This illusionary mural was completed in 1996 on the
front wall of the original building of the Washburn
Iron Works and was the joint project of the Chequamegon
Arts Council, Bonnie Bergman, and the staff and students
of the Northland College Lifelong Learning Center.
The mural is located at 112 E Bayfield Street (State
Route 13) between Ashland and Bayfield.

Bergman's Web site: "
