Am planning a trip in May to West Coast and I don't have time to do the entire Pacific Coast Highway from LA to Portland. Which section would you recommend- LA to San Fran, San Fran to Oregon, or the Oregon coast.

If I had time limitations, I would take I-5 South out of Oregon into the Bay Area. I'd hook up with Hwy 1 in Santa Cruz and take it all the way down to the L.A. area. You'll go through the Monterrey Peninsula, Big Sur, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Malibu, Santa Monica.

    Two words of caution:

Hwy 1 and Hwy 101 do some strange things. Sometimes they run parallel and at other times they are one and the same. For your purposes, watch for a change near or at San Luis Obispo (1 becomes 101) and then a split further down the coast.

I would also get a construction report before taking a trip along 1 or 101. The 1 is a two-lane highway, and a long stretch of one-lane construction can absolutely ruin your day.
