    Welcome to the RTA Forum!

You're talking about a winter trip, so yes, of course there is a significant chance that at some point you'll have to deal with winter weather. The reality is that you could see snow or ice anywhere on your trip from Chicago until you are almost to the Phoenix Metro (including significant portions of Arizona).

Of course, thousands of people still travel every day, all year long, in all but the worst winter storms. All you can do is make sure you have enough time - you need a minimum of 3 days each way in good conditions to safely cover these miles, so you should have at least 4 or 5 days available and be flexible, which may mean getting off the road for a day or even two if you do happen to be traveling during a winter storm.

You really need to check road and weather conditions a day or two before setting out and then you can make an informed decision. As Michael stated, having whatever time is necessary to make the journey safely is the most important factor.

Since you live in Chicago, I will assume you are already an experienced winter driver. The same cannot be said for most drivers in Kentucky, Tennessee etc.

THEY will be your biggest concern, should the lower states receive a rare snowstorm, freezing rain etc. Winter driving conditions that are routine for you are horrendous for them. You'll be amazed at how lousy they drive in such conditions. Some will crawl along at 20 mph with their flashers going. Others will drive too fast for conditions and slide off the highway. Also, their road crews are ill equipped for such eventualities. You won't see the fleet of snow plows like you do in Chicago. If you run into such weather THERE, you might just want to play it safe and head for a hotel early to avoid them. Been there, done that!

Of course, such weather is rare further south so you'll probably have an uneventful trip.
