Recommended way to get out of JFK to I-78 is the Belt Parkway to the Verrazano Bridge (I-278) to NY-440 to the Outerbridge Crossing to I-287. To get to I-80, follow I-78 to PA-33.

Toll is $17.00 on the Verrazano.

You could certainly take old 66 from Seligman to Kingman on your way to LA from the GC, it only adds an hour and embodies the spirit.

If you take I-78 to I-81 to I-40, this doesn't add a lot of miles to either of the other 2 routes and it's toll-free once you get to PA. I'd recommend it.

To get to Monument Valley from I-40, take I-25 north out of Albuquerque to US-550 to US-64 to US-191 to US-163.

With your time frame, I would not stop for a tour of MV. Driving US-163 from Blanding to Kayenta cuts right through MV. It is a slow trip, if only for the fact that every mile there is another great photo opportunity. Although I have never taken a tour of MV, I have driven this road three times, and it still leaves me awestruck. A most scenic and magnificent highway.
