If you are planning to do a long hike in Death Valley, be aware, even at the end of April, early May it can be unbearably hot. You will not want to be out of your air conditioned car for very long. On my visit in late April one year, it was 110F at 10am. Any time other than winter the only time to do any serious hiking might be after the sun has gone down, or before it comes up.
