Occasionally, we enjoy exploring abandoned places, either buildings or ghost towns. They're usually fascinating, especially if there is a history attached with the place.
Recently, we traveled to the Santa Susana Pass in Simi Valley, California. While the area is infamous for the Spahn movie ranch where the Manson family resided in the late 1960s, there is another movie ranch that we visited. This ranch named after western actor/stuntman/Man in a Gorilla suit actor Ray Corrigan, was open to the public as an amusement park from May 1, 1949 until 1966 when Bob Hope closed the ranch.
Just up the street from this place is the Santa Susana Railroad Depot. While we were there, we found an exhibit that showed how Corriganville used to look back when it was a working ranch and amusement park. Then we found out about an area we missed at Corriganville: Robin Hood Lake. This was an artificial underwater lake designed specifically to film underwater scenes. Johnny Weissmuller was most famously filmed there.
So we went back to find it.
If anyone else knows of great abandoned places to travel to, I'd love to hear your story!
