  1. Default Roadtrip San Fran to Vegas- help needed! :)

    Hi There,

Myself and 2 friends (23yr old Males from Australia) are planning on doing a road trip for around a week starting in San Fran and finishing up in Vegas from early October. We want to visit the Grand Canyon and Yosemite potentially as well as spend a day or two in San fran at the start.

Also being young guys we would love to stop off at some college party towns on the way to get that college experience!

Can anyone recommend a route to go and timeframes of how long we should spend where and if 7 or 8 nights is enough?

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

Seeing as how you have listed six days worth of activities, even before allowing for driving time (about two and a half days) or the time needed to get over your jet lag before you can really start enjoying San Francisco, I suppose that it's possible, but it would leave absolutely no down time, or time to stop and enjoy any unexpected sites or activities you find along the way. You can combine some activities. Three of the best college party towns you'll find on your trip are Stanford (Stanford University) and Berkeley (University of California) both in the San Francisco area, and Las Vegas (University of Nevada, Las Vegas).

Routes and the amount of time spent at any given location are up to you. That's the point of RoadTripping - to travel at your own pace on your own itinerary - but in your case, with limited time, your route should probably pretty much stick to just point to point driving. Here are some past discussions of other people's plans for similar trips. Adding time, if possible, is almost always a good idea, especially considering the time and expense of just getting to the area and the possibility that you'll not be doing it again or even (maybe) ever.

There is every chance that the Tioga Pass [CA120] in Yosemite will be open in early October which is a spectacular drive across the Sierra Nevada and on route to Vegas and GC plus you will get to drive through Death valley NP which is a real bonus ! CA120 meets US395 near Mono lake and then you head south to CA136/190 through Death valley and then hook up with NV160 at Pahrump by taking State Line road from DV Junction. This would take you to South Las Vegas but you could first continue to GC and then back to Vegas. Either direction you could stop at Hoover Dam and/or drive part of old route 66 from Kingman through the quirky town of Seligman. You could consider stopping in LV on the way to GC and then ending your trip in LA to save doubling back to LV. It would add a couple of hundred miles to your journey but add another city to your list. Either way I would try and add at least a couple of days and more if possible.
