Default From Madrid (Spain) to Galcier Point.

    Hi all,
I found this wonderful fourm , and I'd like you opinion on a roadtrip a group of 6 friends are preparing for next june 2017.
I know the route is a bit akward but the most far appart places (Yosemite and Monument vally) are musts in this one time in our life trip.
This is the route we've planned so fa. We might be able to add a couple of days for driving or staying in an specific palce if needed. The idea of the trip is sightseeing and tourism mostly, so no long hikes needed ;)

    Day 1: Madrid-Las Vegas
Day 2: Las Vegas-Williams (Rent car, gear up , see small towns in route 66)
Day 3: Williams - Grand Canyon (Stay inside GCNP)
Day 4: Grand Canyon -Monument Valley (navajo tour and stay in The View)
    day 5: Monument Valley-Alamo,NV
    Day 6: Alamo-Mamoth Lakes
Day 7: Mamoth lakes-Yosemite (Stay in the Valley)
    Day 8: Yosemite-Monterey
Day 9: Monterey - Morro Bay
Day 10: Morro Bay- Las Vegas
    Day 11-12: Las Vegas

Thank you for your time and help.

    Default A lovely trip.

Hello and welcome to the RTA forums !

You have the basis for a wonderful trip planned with lots of amazing and diverse scenery to enjoy. Now about those possible extra 2 days that may be available. I would take them if at all possible and make the most of your time. Alamo is an unusual choice for an overnight stop, not that it's a bad thing ! However you could look at Springdale UT and check out Zion NP, another gem of the west. That would use up an extra day. I would also recommend spending another night in Yosemite valley and head off to Monterey the following day. Yosemite is amazing and it will take some time just to get from Mammoth Lakes to the Valley as there are many great viewpoints along the Tioga Pass [CA120] a you cross the mountains and you can easily spend a full day in the valley itself and then there is Glacier point !

Another place of interest is Death valley NP which you could include as you head to Yosemite or back from the coast to Las Vegas although it would need some adjustment for an overnight stop.

Thank you for your help SWDave.

We'll add an extra night in Yosemite. Bryce canyon or Zion were in the first sketches of the route but we had discard them because they would need at lest a couple of days to make them justice. So better if we just don't see them (I'm sure that would break our planned route)
The Alamo stop is because we think it's the best place taking the shortest route between MV and ML . Lots of miles trhoguh a Big Nothing, but at least we get to drive the ET highway.

Alamo doesn't have much for lodging, I'd recommend you make a reservation. Do not leave Alamo without a full tank of gas, there is NO gas between Alamo and Tonopah (160 miles).

The ET highway is pretty cool desert terrain and you will find the 'LittleAlien'Inn' and all it's UFO sighting pictures in the small diner. When you get to the junction of US6 you will see a few old derelict buildings and a stone wall which was the old coral when this was originally a stagecoach post. If you feel like stretching your legs this is a pretty neat place to do so, there is a man made hot pool near the roadside [although fenced off there are holes] and if you walk up the hill following the sulphur trail you will find the natural source of this hot spring as it comes boiling out of the hill. Be careful it's hot up top and cools naturally on it's way to the man made pool.

    Cheers. Thanks for comments.
At Alamo, we plan to stay at Windmill ridge (A Cowboy's Dream would break our tour budget ;)
I've also noticed that Tioga road opened las 18th. The forecasted date for our trip is from the 3rtd of June 2017, so we'll have to make an alternative one jsut in case TR opens later next year.

    Hi all,
Our trip has finally taken shape and we've already reserved lodgin inside GCNP, MV an very close to Yosemite (at EL PORTAL)
Our trip would be like this:

    1 MADRID LAS VEGAS
    2 LAS VEGAS
    3 LAS VEGAS
    4 LAS VEGAS-GRAND CANYON
5 GRAND CANYON- PAGE (morning river trip)
    6 PAGE MONUMENT - VALLEY
    7 MONUMENT VALLEY -ALAMO
8 ALAMO - YOSEMITE (El portal)
    9 YOSEMITE (El portal)
10 YOSEMITE (El portal) - MONTERREY
    11 MONTERREY - MORRO BAY
12 MORRO BAY - LAS VEGAS

There are two days (7th&8th) with a lot of miles to drive, but we will be 4 drivers..
    What do you think?
    Thank you for your comments.

It looks a pretty decent plan and the drives aren't that bad. If you could change your booking in MV it would make less miles to go therefrom GC and then to Page as you look to be heading to south rim.

Yes, to get from MV to Alamo the most efficient way you would be backtracking through Page anyway. You also will have to choose whether to drive through Zion or bypass it.

Thank you foryour comments Southwest Dave and Glc.
Yes what you say is the most logical route. But going first to Page, was the best way we could fit the first morning river boat trip from Page (7AM). There is another one at 11AM that we could do if we go first to MV. We prefered the early trip even though we have to drive those 80 extra miles.
What is really a dilemma is if we drive through Zion or not.
By google it's only about 40 minutes of extra drive, but what's holding us back is that it's Saturday and we would most probably face heavy traffic in the Springdale area.I guess we'll most probable improvise at the time.

    Saludetes
