  1. Default Us Route 20 as alternative to I-90 East towards Chicago

We are planning our return from Yellowstone/Tetons and don't really want to go back the same way. Already stopped in Badlands, Custer, etc. has anyone driven US 20 instead of I-90 East? We live in Chicago suburbs and are familiar with both routes in Illinois. We are willing to add some time to our return IF this alternate is worth it.

Hi, and Welcome to the Great American Roadtrip Forum.

Wherever I have driven US20, I have always found it an interesting and much more scenic route than I-90.

If you are not entering Ywellowstone over Beartooth Pass, I would recommend you leave that way,. through Lamar Valley, Cooktown and Red Lodge. From there I would make my way over the Big Horn Mountains on Alt 14, past Big Horn Canyon and the Medici9ne Wheel.

I recall most vividly my traverse of Iowa on US-20. It was a most pleasant and scenic journey. As you recognise, it will take more time, though through IA it is almost all freeway standard.
