  1. Default Taking my mother on a road trip.

I am taking my mother (76 yrs old) on a road trip from Charlotte, NC to Springfield IL. I will leaver her there with her siblings. I thought this was going to be a straight two day trip with minimal stops. However, she has informed me that she wants this trip to last a week. She suggested we go to New Orleans first. Not going to happen...it is the wrong direction!

Any suggestions or ideas would be great. Thanks.

Default It's your family, it's your life, you have to live with your decision.

    Welcome to the RTA Forum!

It is going to be you who has to decide how you want to deal with your own mother. That's a decision with consequences that you will have to live with for the rest of your life.

If you're doing the driving, and just want to get her to Illinois ASAP so you can leave her with her siblings, then I suppose there is not much she can do to stop you from making this trip in 2 days with as few stops as possible.

On the other hand, she's 76 years old and likely knows that she doesn't have many years left to enjoy a roadtrip or to see New Orleans. I can hardly blame her for wanting to see and experience things, and perhaps share some quality time with her son, while she still has the life and health to enjoy it. If your response to that is "it's not going to happen," well then I guess it's not going to happen, but if I were in your shoes, I would at least think twice and perhaps try to come to some kind of compromise.

I'm going to agree with MWMichael -- your mom may not have a lot of time left to spend with you, and you just may enjoy that little "getaway" with her. Sure it's "not on the way", but if you both have a week, why not?

It's a day and a half or so to New Orleans, depending on what route you want to take. Then another day and a half from New Orleans to Springfield. So that leaves you with roughly 4 days -- perhaps you want to stop and see something between Charlotte and NO, maybe Great Smoky Mountains NP? And perhaps something else between NO and Springfield, such as taking the Great River Road north.

Think about it. And as the old saying goes, "If mom ain't happy, ain't nobody happy!"

I think you misunderstand. I am not against a road trip with my mother. I am against the idea of going to New Orleans. I am looking for ideas heading north.

My mother is bipolar and is cycling up. Even at 76 she can be difficult to deal with during these episodes.

To be honest if you are looking to make this an enjoyable trip with your mother, then chatting to and planning with her while finding a compromise would be the best outcome for you both. She might think Nashville and/or Memphis would be good substitutes for New Orleans and throwing in some nature like the Smokey mountains for a mix.

Now you've got me a little confused.

At first you indicated that you wanted to make this trip in 2 days with minimal stops, but now it appears you are open to spending more time on the road, as your mother wishes. How much time are you now thinking for this trip?

As Dave mentioned, Memphis and Nashville could be good substitutes that would require fewer miles. Cincinnati, Indianapolis, maybe even St. Louis or Chicago could also work, but that really depends upon what both you and your mother can agree upon together.
