  1. Default Round trip road trip (LA to ???) Mid-July

Okay so we are planning on flying to LA on July 7th. We will be in California for a week and our flight leaves from LA on July 14th. So we are thinking of driving a 'loop'.

We are thinking of renting a car in LA and driving the Highway 1 to Monterrey or SF(?). Then would like to also see the inland parks (maybe Sequoia and Kings Canyon) on our loop back to LA. I know that this is a very wide open itinerary right now. But we are in the very early planning stages. Bottom line we know we want to do the Highway 1 drive and see the giant sequoias. It will be my wife, 12 yr. old daughter and myself. Any routes, stops, places to stay, places to eat, must see things, or travel tips were be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help.

Default Head south down the coast.

    Hi and welcome back.

With a week a loop to Sequoia and the coast would be a lovely trip especially if you include a visit to Yosemite. You won't have a lot of time in any one place but it will be fun. Head to the inland attractions first [Sequoia/Kings canyon and possibly Yosemite] and then head south down the coast, the Ocean side scenic pull outs will be on your side of the road.

That's an interesting idea of hitting the parks first. Thanks. If anyone has a sample itinerary or other ideas I would greatly appreciated any input. Thanks again.

It's an easy drive direct from LA to Sequoia and you should have a bit of time for sight seeing on arrival. Three Rivers has lodgings and you will find some on the way out the north kiosk towards Fresno, although if your budget can manage it you can't beat staying in the park. Next day you could continue to Yosemite valley and again, you could find lodgings outside the park or in depending on budget and needs. You could then explore more the following morning and head to SF in the afternoon and consider a trip to Alcatraz Island the following day. Monterey Aquarium is very popular and you could enjoy more of the area before continuing down the coast. An overnight in the San Simeon/Cambria area would break the journey and allow you time to enjoy the sights, possibly check out Hearst Castle. What's more important is what appeals to you so do a little research and juggle your itinerary to suit you and then we can help to 'fine tune' it if need be.

You'll be starting your vacation during the busiest vacation week of the year: Fourth of July Week! The following week will also be busy. You might want to book Alcatraz reservations soon, and perhaps lodging as well.

We kind of figured it would be pretty busy in July, we may be able to hold off for another week, but that's as late as our schedule will allow us to travel. Thanks for the heads up, not a huge fan of fighting crowds, but that's what summer vacation is about right? Any other advice is, of course, welcome for this California newbie.
