Hi, and Welcome to the Great American Roadtrip Forum.

The 'best' route is the route which will take you to the places you want to see, and the experiences you want to have. There is no such thing as a generic 'best'.

So firstly tell us the purpose of the trip, the interests of the travellers and the time available for the trip. Then the responses you get will be suited to your specific trip.

The other thing you might like to consider to see in detail, just how many routes there are available to you, and how many attractions along the way you have to choose from. So if you have not already done so, purchase a Rand McNally road atlas from the RTA store via the link at the bottom of this page. You will have it in a couple of weeks, if you order it now. Not only will you find it invaluable for the planning, but it is essential to have maps on the road. Don't be tempted to rely solely on your electronics. Many have done so at their peril - some fatal.

Default Best is what you make it.

As above, the purpose and goals of your trip decide what's best but if it's to get there as quickly as possible then it's I40 with 3 overnight stops. If you have 2 or 3 weeks then you can go anywhere you want to go, which will mean a little research on your part before we can give meaningful help. There is no way anyone can forecast what the weather will be when you travel this far in advance, but it's unlikely you will encounter anything drastic in May.

Five days would be more relaxed and give you a little time to sight see, maybe even spend half a day at Grand canyon NP. You could head north from Williams through Tusayan in to the south rim and exit the park to the east along Desertview drive to US89 back to Flagstaff.
