  1. Default North Alabama to Grand Canyon-advice needed

Hello everyone! We are looking to take the family from Alabama to the Grand Canyon in early June. On our 'must-do' list is seeing horseshoe bend, and we would like to take a raft/kayak excursion. Other than that we are looking for any tips or advice we can get. Thanks in advance! This forum is always so helpful!

    Default Time ?

Hi. How much time do you have available for the trip ? Without knowing this it's not really possible to make meaningful recommendations. Presumably it's a round trip [?] which would amount to around 6 days driving out and back.

Thanks Dave. I guess that would have been helpful information. We are planning on being in the area for 5 days.

The question was how many days in total do you have for this trip - both transit time and time in the area. You can't even drive from Alabama to the Grand Canyon and back in only 5 days.

Thanks for that reply...but I'm pretty sure I answered the question. We are planning on being in the area for 5 days. This doesn't include our travel time. Not looking for advice on what to see in between.

    Default Here's a few.

It's a case of some attractions "in the area" might be better seen on the way out or on the way back rather than 'to and froing'. In the area there are places like Walnut canyon, Lowell Observatory, Sunset Crater, Monument valley, Lake Powell, Antelope canyon and Marble canyon. You could see some of them if you are travelling along I40 on the way, perhaps even stop at the Petrified forest, and then perhaps drive through Monument valley on the way home after visiting the Page area. You could also visit Four corners which is a bit of a tacky tourist trap, but hey you get to take a photo of one limb in each of the four States.

Default Focusing on the Grand Canyon.

Since you will be in the area for five days, you might like to consider the Grand Canyon from both angles. A visit to the North Rim will give you a completely different perspective of this great natural wonder. Having the Grand Canyon as your primary goal, consider experiencing a sunset/sunrise over the canyon - a spectacular sight on a clear night. Best done if you have accommodation within the park, but not impossible if you don't. Just means you have to drive home after dark. You might also find that some of the accommodation near the North Rim is quite a bit more affordable than by the south rim.

Default If you don't mind a little backtracking.....

You might be interested in checking out Lees Ferry. It is on 89A, which splits from 89 at Bitter Springs. I recall going through Marble Canyon and over the Navajo Bridge, (where there is a very interesting interpretive centre) and coming to a sign by the side of the road 'Lees Ferry'. Ever curious I decided to go see, and followed the very scenic road through the red rock formations and all the boards explaining them, all the way to the river.

I was surprised to see the Colorado River, right there. You could walk off the 'beach' straight into the water. There was an outfit getting ready to raft the Colorado. (I do not know anymore about the outfitters.) I believe this the only place in canyon country where the river is accessible- as can be seen in the photo if you scroll down this page.
