Default Dayton, Ohio to Niagara Falls Canada.

What is the best route? Drive to Buffalo and cross at Fort Erie, Ontario or drive to Detroit and cross at Windsor, Ontario? Anyone have any idea of the toll costs for both routes? Want to hear from anyone who has made this trip using either route.

    Default Another choice.

Hi, and Welcome to the Great American Roadtrip Forum.

From what I recall, the route through Ontario, via Sarnia (not Detroit) has by far the fewest tolls. Certainly the route I-90 through Buffalo has too many for me. The route through Windsor is too congested - Sarnia gives a much better border crossing experience.

    Default tolls etc

Honestly, tolls are a pretty insignificant cost no matter which way you go. You'll have a toll that ranges between $3-5 to cross an international bridge/tunnel, and if you go through NY, you'll have another stretch of toll road, but that will also be under $5.

    Is this a round trip?

If so, then I'd probably go up to Detroit and cross the Ambassador Bridge. Both routes through Windsor do involve a few miles of city streets, but the Bridge has easier access to I-75 than the Tunnel, and you can fill your tank with cheap american gas right at the duty free shop, before crossing into Canada. Going to Sarnia isn't a bad option either, and you do go basically from freeway to freeway, but it seems like I always see longer delays at the Sarnia border crossing. What would be a good idea is to check traffic reports as you get to Detroit and see which crossings has the shortest wait time.

Coming back, I'd cross right at Niagara Falls - not Fort Erie - using the Rainbow Bridge. Not only is it the most scenic of all the border crossings - as it provides a fantastic view of the Falls - but since trucks are not allowed to use it, the wait times to cross are typically relatively short.
