  1. Default Road Trip from White Bear Lake, MN to Memphis, TN and back

We plan to go on a road trip at the end of June 2016. We have a few ideas, but any more ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated. This is our first road trip. We have one 9 year-old son who like interactive activities. We have 10 days for the trip.

From WBL, MN to Memphis, TN we plan to stop in St. Louis. We plan to visit the Gateway Arch and Meramec Caverns in St. Louis. We will drive through Iowa, but not sure what to do there. We will visit the Graceland in Memphis. From Memphis to go back home, we would like to stop in Chicago, IL and Milwaukee, WI; however, we would like to visit other places between Memphis and Chicago. This is where we are not so sure what to do.

Any ideas on lodging, dining, attractions, activities, etc. would be great.

Thank you very much for spending your time to share with us.

    Default Some Ideas Then

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

Without getting into details about where to eat each meal and spend each night, let's first worry about finding places along your route that will interest you and your son. Some of the places that I think might intrigue all of you include Kalona Historical Village in Iowa, Nauvoo IL (just across the Mississippi and upriver from Keokuk), and Mark Twain's hometownHannibal - all on the way to St. Louis. In St. Louis, there's the Arch of course but also the zoo, a transportation museum, and Grant's Farm. On the way down to Memphis, I'd probably stay on the west side of the river. You might find Ste. Genevieve interesting. It's an old French town with some nice old homes and a real old-fashioned ice cream parlor. Then in Memphis, Mud Island is worth a look-see.

Working your way back home, you might first want to cross the River and head into Kentucky a bit to travel the Land Between the Lakes before heading up into Illinois, known as the 'Land of Lincoln' with lots of sites associated with him, most notably Springfield. Chicago is home to a world class dino (and other displays) museum, the Field. while a stroll around Milwaukee's harbor (and library) might be in order. On your last leg back to White Bear Lake, check out Circus World in Baraboo WI.

Once you get a better handle on what places you'd like to see in between your major stops and how long you'd like to send at each of them, you'll be in a better position to be looking for restaurants and accommodations that fit the schedule you've set.
