  1. Default Road trip Dallas to west USA

Hello! My husband and I are trying to plan a trip from Dallas to Grand Canyon, Las Vegas (maybe), Colorado, Jackson Hole Wyoming (we have a friend there) –and visit Yellow Stone while we are there, Portland, Cali.Definitely Red wood National Park (the beach maybe... not sure where exactly in Cali but we are open to suggestions) then come back to Dallas through maybe New Mexico. We haven't had anything set in stone yet, but we are quite flexible, we are thinking of a month long trip. Possibly for the month of April or the month of June 2016. Open to suggestions on routes to take and places to visit :) thanks

    Welcome to the RTA Forum!

When you've got a month and basically all of the American West to work with, you're a bit too early in the planning to start worrying about routes. Really, right now, I'd focus on figuring out what things you most want to see. For example, between the Grand Canyon and Jackson there are nearly a dozen National Parks that could also be worked into your plans. You've got just as many options between Portland and Southern California.

Having said that, if you do this trip in April, you've got some weather concerns to worry about. Most of Yellowstone is still closed to cars in April, and the part of the park that is accessible is the far northern edge, several hours away from Jackson. Even if you wait until June, Jackson is not a good base for Yellowstone, as it is a very long drive to most of the park. Even the closest attractions are more than an hour away, and the Northern areas of the park can take you more than 3 hours of driving from Jackson.

Default You can do most of that yourself.

Those are your essential tool in any RoadTrip planning process. Start by marking all the places you know you want to visit. Then connect the dots. Then look for more places of interest and scenic routes along the lines connecting the dots. Repeat until you've got as many sites and roads as you think you want.
If you are a member of AAA, it is probably the best place to get maps. Alternatively a road atlas such as Rand McNally will be of great help.

    Enjoy the planning.
