  1. Default San Francisco to Atlanta

First time posting! I'll be making a trip from San Francisco to Atlanta in mid December. I would like it to be a straight shot and I'm wondering which route would be better I-40 or I-10/I-20? And also since it'll be in December where can I expect to encounter snow or ice along the way?

Default Altitude not latitude you need to worry about.

Hi and Welcome to the Great American Roadtrip Forum.

How long are you allowing for this trip? At 2500 miles this is five solid days'

It is a fallacy that going south is a better route to avoid winter weather. Fact is, you need to cross the mountains, and I-10 and I-40 both have stretches at altitudes where snow and ice are a possibility.

Best advice would be to plan two routes and keep checking the weather forecasts up till your departure. Then take the route which looks most likely to give you a storm free run. Not guaranteed though, best keep an extra day in reserve, just in case you need to sit out a storm.

    Have a safe trip.

The straightest shot from SF to Atlanta is I-5 to Bakersfield, CA-58 to Barstow, I-40 to Memphis, US-78/I-22 to Birmingham, then I-20 to Atlanta.
