  1. Default Need Help Planning ouRoad Trip from San Francisco down the PCH to Las Vegas in an RV!

    Sorry ouRoad-should say Our Road...
Looking for some guidance for traveling down the PCH from San Fran to Vegas. We will have 7 days in total and want to spend at least 2 days in San Francisco. We would also like to take a trip through Death Valley, but not sure of the roads with an RV. The motor home we rented is 24' long so we are hoping to take advantage of the outdoors as much as possible. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Welcome to RTA!

First - I would not plan to pick up the RV in San Francisco until you are ready to leave on your road trip. This is because parking is tough enough in SF for cars - RV's, almost impossible - and frankly, there aren't a lot of RV parks for overnights in SF.

Second -- Death Valley vs. RV. The one thing I think you left out is the approximate time of the year for this trip. In the summer, or any time that is likely to be super hot, the RV rental place may have a clause in the rental agreement that says you can't take it through Death Valley. Yes, roads are usable by RV's.

Thanks for the advice. We are arriving in San Francisco on October 15th.

Check the paperwork for the RV *carefully*. October is still the desert.

Have you ever rented an RV before?

Exactly what days? When do you pick it up and when do you drop it off?

Have you reserved any State Park camping along the PCH yet?

We have checked the RV paper work and October is ok to travel through Death Valley. We haven't rented an RV before but we own one. We are staying one night in San Francisco (thanks to Donna for the advice) and picking up the RV on the 16th. We have scheduled drop off in Las Vegas on the 22nd and haven't booked any parks or campsites yet.

You will probably be forced to pick up the RV after NOON. If it is at Cruise America, be prepared to wait 1-2 hours FOR YOUR TURN to register, as was MY experience. You are picking this up on a busy Friday, which might add to your delay. You might be luckier than I was last September, but I still suggest you get there as early as possible so you have time to get to your first campsite.

Realize that you have only 5 FULL days for this trip and plan accordingly. The days you pick up and drop off the RV are essentially wasted.

You will have a difficult time finding camping reservations on such short notice. Pfeiffer Big Sur is already sold out, but keep logging onto RESERVE AMERICA several times per day and you may get lucky if someone cancels. PBS is half way through the most scenic part of the PCH and a great place to camp.

Friday night I suggest you try to book a reservation at New Brighton State Beach or Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park. NBSB actually has some sites overlooking the ocean! HCRSP has trails through beautiful redwood stands.

The PCH is drop dead gorgeous! TAKE YOUR TIME! You will want to stop at every pull off for the astonishing views. Allow time for this, and plan on having lunch (or all meals) in the RV! No restaurant has better views than what you'll see from the RV.

Also take time for the Monterey Bay Aquarium. You could spend a day there. Also, consider a Whale Watch trip. Great memories!

Good luck and keep trying to book your campsite. You don't want to be driving around in the dark with nowhere to go.
