Default Weather advice - motorcycle trip in CA/NV - October 2015.

    Hi all,

My friend and I are doing a 5 day roadtrip in the first week of October on a pair of Harleys, we can't wait! Now that it's getting close, I'm thinking about what clothes to wear for the trip and researching typical weather at this time of year along our tentatively planned route - we'd appreciate any advice you may have on what temperatures we should expect, as the route does have a lot of high and low elevation points along it. Also, if you have any suggestions on places to stop and visit along the way, that would be great!

Firstly, this is the route we are thinking of following:

Day 1 - Las Vegas to Lone Pine - via Death Valley.

Day 2 - Lone Pine to Carson City - planning a stop at Manzanar Internment Camp that morning - continue along Highway 395 and maybe stop at a few other locations on the way to Carson City.

Day 3 - Carson City to Austin Nevada - taking the Lonliest Highway 50. Possibly might go a little further to Eureka or even as far as Ely this day, depending on how often we stop and how much progress we make.

Day 4 - Austin, NV to Great Basin National Park - explore a bit of the park and stay in Baker, NV that night.

Day 5 - Baker NV to Las Vegas via US 93.

    Thanks for any advice!

    John

    Default Nice tour.

Hello and welcome to RTA !

It's a little early to know what the weather will be this far in advance, but we travel around this time of year when we can and it's been kind to us with warm to hot sunny days. It can start to get chilly at night, so it's wise to pack layered clothing. Once you get to 7-10 days out from your trip you can start getting an idea from weather sites such as wunderground with their 10 day forecasts.

From Vegas you can take the 'Locals route'. Head out to Pahrump and just north of town take Ash medows/ State line road to DV junction and onto Furnace creek. You could detour down to Badwater basin from this poInt and visit the lowest spot in the USA. Just west of Lone Pine you will see Mt Whitney, the highest peak in the lower 48. You can ride up the Whitney Portal road and you might want to check out the Alabama hills along Movie Flat road, named so because of the amount of films shot on location there.

On to Carson you have the Mammoth scenic loop, June Lakes loop and Mono Lake, non adding too much time. You might also want to check out Lake Tahoe.

You will get a great ride going up Wheeler peak in Great basin NP and even better views coming down. You can take a walk up the top through the old forest and to Stella Lake. It can make you puff a bit up there though as the air is pretty thin !

    Hi Dave,

Thanks very much for your reply, and your great suggestions! Yep, that is the route we are planning to Death Valley, via Pahrump, and will take the detour to Badwater.

I just had a quick look at the road up Mt. Whitney - that looks really cool, will have to check that out also.

    Thanks again,
    John

    Hi again,

I'm getting pretty excited about this trip now - flying out to Vegas this weekend!

Another question for anyone familiar with Highway 50 - to break up the journey between Carson City and Great Basin National Park we want to stop overnight somewhere along this route. Which town would be better or more fun to stay in - Austin NV or Eureka NV? We'd like to have a local pub to check out and have a few beers etc.

    Thanks!

Neither town has much of anything - I'd spend the night in Ely.

How many miles can a Harley go on one tank of gas? You may have some issues. There is gas in Austin and Eureka but it's expensive. It's 110 miles from Fallon to Austin, there is absolutely nothing in between.

Harley can go about 200 miles between fill-ups I think, so I'll definitely be getting gas along there.

We may have different ideas on what is worth seeing! I'm quite happy to spend the night in a very small town with no entertainment other than a bar where we can meet and chat with some locals, but from a quick google, Eureka seems a little more interesting.

    Thanks,
    John

Austin has 3 independent motels and a saloon. Eureka is about the same but a bit larger. Ely has casinos and a good selection of hotels/motels and restaurants/bars.
