    Default Timescales.

Hello and welcome to the RTA forums !

You say your dates are "set in stone" but you don't say how much time you have for the trip and whether or not you are just tied to flight times, or actual lodging bookings ? Once we have more detail we can make suggestions, but my immediate reaction was why go all the way to Salt Lake City when you have many other interesting places closer to the other attractions you could visit.

Hi thank you for your reply, we do have hotel books in all the places but on the days we were traveling between places we have no set plans or need to rush so were looking for places of interest between them and interesting routes . Our trip is just under 3 wks, 4 nts in San Fran, 2 in Yosemite , 2 in Reno , 2 in SLC 1 at Grand Canyon south rim and 3 nts in Vegas, with regards to Salt Lake City that was to see a friend out there ! I appreciate its probably a long detour!

    Thanks

    Zoe

Are you skipping Moab? You didn't list any nights there, and you're not going to have time to see anything around there if trying to get from SLC to GC in the same day. As it is, you don't have much time at all at the Grand Canyon itself.

    Default Limited Opportunities

There isn't a whole lot of wiggle room on any of your driving days once you leave Reno, and essentially none for 'sights on route'. You barely have time to stop at a few of the many pull-outs along the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, and as Michael points out - no time whatsoever to stop at Arches. So any recommendations for stops along those legs would just lead to frustration. So where can you make the best use of your time. I won't suggest any stops between San Francisco and Yosemite because your time in the park is already limited to one full day and maybe an additional evening on arrival. That's barely enough time to see the highlights. It's also a shame that you're going in October because all of the waterfalls will be completely dried up.

One detour you should consider is to drive the shoreline of Lake Tahoe a bit on your way. How you get there will depend on whether you leave Yosemite back out to the west or cross Tioga Pass. The Tioga Pass route is shorter, more scenic, and sees less traffic and would make the most of the morning of the day you get from Yosemite to Reno. If you go that way then NV-756/NV-207 provides a workable route from US-395 over to Tahoe Village; US-50/NV-28 a scenic drive3 up the eastern shore of the lake to Incline Village; and NV-431 would get you back to US-395. The only other recommendation I'd make is that, if you get a relatively early start out of Reno, plan to have lunch at the Star Hotel in Elko. You'll be in the middle of a Basque sheep herding region and the Star serves food cooked in the Basque tradition and served family style.

Overall you have a nice trip plan. Between Moab and the GC you should take 163 from 191 which will take you through Monument valley and highlight the 'Forest Gump' approach view. Try and get an early start out of SF to miss morning rush and get to Yosemite as early as possible to max your time there, it's amazing. As well as the valley, don't miss the drive up to Glacier point !! I would highly recommend the drive over Tioga Pass [CA120] on route to Reno, spectacular ! If you arrive in Moab by early afternoon you could visit the Islands in the Sky section of Canyonlands the same day and walk out to Grandview point, leaving you the following day to explore Arches NP.

That's lovely thank you very much for your comments , will definitely be taking that route from Moab looks amazing, will defiantly try and get to Moab earlier too. Definitely going to go the 120 / 395 route from Yosemite to Reno , Lake Tahoe looks lovely would I be correct in thinking to do the detour wouldn't take hours ? Would love to do this route I ve been trying to get a rough idea of the distance just so we can planning accordingly would be nice to stop on the journey along the lake to but wouldn't want to get to Reno to late in the evening

    Many Thanks for your help

    Default Lake Tahoe Detour Timing

The 'detour' along Lake Tahoe would add about an hour of driving time to your run from Yosemite up to Reno, depending on what you're driving, what traffic is like, and how comfortable you are on smaller state highways in the mountains. But if you're planning on using CA-120 over Tioga Pass, then there's nothing particularly daunting about the route from Gardnerville to Lake Tahoe. So instead of taking around five hours, budget six plus stops and you'll be fine.

That's brilliant thank you very much that's definitely worth the detour , think on all the journeys will be worth an early start to make the most of the journeys !
