    Default Where, Exactly?

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

We simply can't answer your question as stated for a couple of reasons. First and foremost is that "North Carolina" is just too vague to be meaningful. If you are starting from Elizabeth City your route would be completely different that if you were starting from Tabor City, and both of those would be different from a route starting from Mount Airy. Also it would help to know how much time you have for the trip, whether it's to be one-way or round-trip, and if there are any budget restrictions.

We are starting from Winston-Salem, NC. Would like to make the round trip in 10 days and we not have any budget restrictions. Thank you.

    Default The information you want.

Have you actually checked good detailed maps, such as those produced by AAA. Their State maps are full of all the roads and routes at your disposal, as well as attractions along the way - natural, historic, etc.

Here is a paragraph which might point the way.

Those are your essential tool in any RoadTrip planning process. Start by marking all the places you know you want to visit. Then connect the dots. Then look for more places of interest and scenic routes along the lines connecting the dots. Repeat until you've got as many sites and roads as you think you want.
    Happy planning.

Default Good Routes and a Few Stops

As is usual, I'm going to suggest that you try to do a 'loop' trip where you take different routes out and back. One way would be the shortest route, I-77/I-64/US-35/OH-124/OH-32/I-74/I-80/I-380/US-218/US-18/I-35/I-80 through Charleston, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Peoria, the Quad Cities and Sioux Falls. The second would be a bit farther south of that route, I-77/I-64/I-70/I-29/I-90 through Charleston, Louisville, St. Louis, Kansas City, and Sioux Falls. You could do either route in either direction in three days of driving (each). So you'll have to decide how much of your remaining four days you'll want to devote to southwestern South Dakota and how much you want to devote to stops along the way.

Significant historic and nature sites on the first route I described would include Mount Rogers National Recreation Area and New River Gorge National River (both of these are on both routes), Carl Sandberg's and Wyatt Earp's Birthplaces, Herbert Hoover's Presidential Library, site of the plane crash that took Holly, Valens and Richardson, and finally Buffalo Gap National Grasslands and Badlands National park 9again, on both routes).

Some on the second route would be Carter Caves in eastern Kentucky, the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial, Lewis and Clark State Memorial Park (where their expedition actually started), Harry Truman's home and Presidential Library, and the Western Historic Trails Center in Council Bluffs.

Buck, check your route numbers. US-32? Do you mean US-35 or US-23? US-212? You mean US-218?

    I-67? You mean I-64?
