    Default Getting started.

Hi and Welcome to the Great American Roadtrip Forum.

Here is the very best advice I can pass on, to help you get started:

Those are your essential tool in any RoadTrip planning process. Start by marking all the places you know you want to visit. Then connect the dots. Then look for more places of interest and scenic routes along the lines connecting the dots. Repeat until you've got as many sites and roads as you think you want.

Lifey has given you the first best tip: get a paper map, and start looking at it. Look at your starting point, and your ending point. What's in between? The three of you should do this together, with a pencil and some sticky notes, and start flagging things that look interesting.

from what way we should do it?
If you're referring to routes, see above.

    what car we need?
Here is where you can possibly have a problem. Do any of the three of you have a car already? Will it work for a long trip? If yes, there's your answer. If you have to rent, bear in mind that the vast majority of car rental places in the US will tack on a "young driver fee" that is $15-25 per day, per driver. Ouch.

Is your trip one way? You may be hit with a one-way drop off fee, on that rental, usually three figures around $500.

we plaining to sleep in camping where and when?
Your best bets are in county, state and national forests and parks that run campgrounds. They are generally pretty cheap. Three of you can usually share one site without problem. Commercial "campgrounds" are generally a lot more expensive and cater to RV's rather than those in tent. If you plan to camp across the country, you will have the most problems near the big national parks, but you can often find a spot in a national forest just outside the park. Also plan your driving accordingly. If you are trying to set up a campsite at night and tear it down in the morning, that will use up a lot of time. When we were tent-campers, we tried not to drive more than 350 miles in a day.

any festivals that in the way...?
What kind of festivals? The only one I know of is the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, but that takes place in April.
