  1. Default Road trip from SF, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon

    Hello friends,
I am planning a trip with my family (4 teenagers, age ranges from 12-19), we are active and like sight seeing stuffs. We are renting an RV on 8/14/15 and return on 8/22/15. I am open to all suggestion, we have not been to Vegas, would like to visit to see what is all the fuzz about but do not have a strong affinity to it so we can spend minimum time in Vegas. Also, would an intermediate 25' have issues while visiting Vegas? Do you suggest that we rent a van when we get to town?

    Default Yosemite ?

Hello and welcome to RTA !

You don't say whether or not you are dropping the RV back to SF or elsewhere ? This is a popular trip and one which should include Yosemite NP on route from SF. You won't have any issues with the RV while in Vegas, it will be easier to park it up in one of the RV parks and use public transport or walking which is possible if you stay at Circus circus RV park. The Oasis RV resort is very nice but will mean a cab fare to the Strip, probably around $20. You need to book RV sites asap and it might be too late to stay in the National park[s] if you haven't already booked and will then have to look ar surrounding campgrounds.

Circusland RV is the only RV park on the Strip, and is located on the "north Strip". It's now run by KOA, I believe. Click here for the link. Bear in mind that is a parking lot with hookups. There is very little grass, the sites are close together, and if you have a dog, you will not be allowed to tie the dog to the RV outside. You can only walk them in the Dog Walk area, and must be seen carrying a bag between your RV and the Dog Walk area.

Eight days is a short time for the loop you are considering, so plan well.

    Default For the younger ones.

At each NP there is a free program for children - the Junior Ranger Program - from which adults also benefit greatly, in which it is highly recommended that you enrol your school age children. It will help them learn a lot about that park, and appreciate the need for its conservation, etc. At the end of the activities they undertake they will be rewarded with some neat souvenirs to take home.

San Francisco to Las Vegas is 565 miles and it's do-able but one long days drive in a motorhome. We live in the bay area so we do this trip all the time. There are no campgrounds between the Yermo, CA KOA (which is just past Barstow, CA) and Las Vegas so if you pass Barstow, you're pretty much committed to go all the way to Las Vegas.

We've stayed at the Oasis RV park in Las Vegas and it was a short walk to the bus stop to go to the strip. Problem is even a short walk in August is going to be extremely HOT. We did it in the fall so it was cooler. As mentioned the Circus - Circus campground is just a parking lot with hookups.

You might consider doing a round trip of Las Vegas of one night, Zion National Park for a couple of nights, Bryce Canyon for a night, Grand Canyon south rim for a couple of nights and then take two days to drive back to San Francisco if you have to return the RV there. Problem will be getting camping reservations in the parks at this late date.

Once you decide on your itinerary I might be able to help you with campgrounds.
