  1. Default Help with road trip from Dallas to Grand Canyon

We are planning a last minute road trip to the Grand Canyon from Dallas. We have a 7 year old son. What are good places to stop, what are must see things to do when we get to the GC and where are places to stay? This is the first time for us to do this. Thank you so much! What a great website by way!

Default How much time do you have?

Hello and welcome to RTA !

Much will depend on how much time you have and what your interests are. If you are looking at getting there as quick and safe as possible you will need an overnight stop, Santa Rosa NM would be a midway point. When you get to the GC you will be given guides and maps and the Rangers will answer any questions you have. From Flagstaff I would head north on 89 and enter the canyon from the east entrance and watch the views develop as you make your way to the main canyon. Where to stay ? Well you can't beat being in the NP if there are available lodgings and your budget can manage it. Outside the park you have Cameron near the east entry point and Tusayan near the south which are the nearest and dearest to the park. A little further away you will find more budget options around Flagstaff and Williams. There are other areas of interest nearby if you have time, Petrified forest, Sunset crater and Monument valley are a few examples.

    Welcome to RTA!

Once you are in the GCNP, stop at the Visitor Center and enroll your son in the Junior Ranger program. It will help him have fun at the park while learning all about the geological, flora, fauna, and historical features. Upon completion of the activities, he can get a badge or patch as a souvenir.

Also, he can keep a journal of the entire trip, using writing-drawing-photos-small souvenirs in it. It will be a great way to remember the trip, and to help him write the inevitable narrative "what I did with my summer vacation" this fall, in school.

Thank you for your help. I'm thinking a 10 day trip out of this. So would that be more than enough adequate time?

Yes your time would be adequate, but you can never have more than enough on a roadtrip. ;-) If you want to take a little longer getting there you could head north from Albuquerque and visit Four corners and drive through Monument valley on route to the Grand canyon. Heading a little further to Mesa Verde NP wouldn't be out of the question, but it depends on your interests and how much time you want to spend travelling. On the way home you could 'stop on the corner' in Winslow, visit Petrified forest and for something a little alien, Roswell. I would do a little research and study the maps and see what appeals to you. Ask your son for his opinions while doing so, it will be a lot more fun for him if he has a vested interest in where you are going.
