  1. Default Louisville, KY to Outer Banks, NC

Driving from Louisville to OBX in mid July. Probably over two day period. Looking for any comments, experiences, suggestions. Thinking about going through VA vs. NC but welcome any information from everyone that has been through these areas.

    Default Why Not Do Both?

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

People often don't realize how easy it is to do a loop trip when they're going somewhere even modestly distant from home. Your's is a good example. The shortest/most efficient route between Louisville, the OBX and back is right around 1615. For a grand total of 30 miles more, you can take a completely different route each way and see places like the New River National Scenic Waterway in West Virginia, Jefferson's Monticello and the Historic Triangle (Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Yorktown) in Virginia, the Outer Banks (of course) and 'Mayberry' in North Carolina, and finally Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, Cumberland Gap National Historical Park and Great Smoky Mountains National Park all as you re-cross the Appalachians. There is always more than one way to skin a cat, and usually those alternatives are interesting and rewarding in their own right. Never think there's just one 'best' route.
