  1. Default SF to Grand Canyon!

I've used the search feature to read old threads but I'm still not certain of our plan.

We are a family of 5 (2 adults, 3 small kids under 8.) We are trying to put together a last minute road trip to the Grand Canyon (South Rim) from San Francisco (east bay) this Summer. We'll be traveling in our minivan, staying in hotels/motels along the way and can spend 7-10 days on the road. Would love any tips or destinations we should check out. We want it to be a leisurely trip taking in the sights and not spending more than 5 hours driving each day. Thank you for your help!

    Default Plenty of options available.

    Hello and welcome to RTA!

Is this a round trip or one way in the 10 days ? A popular trip would be to head south along the coast then head inland to GC from around Cambria, if LA is not a priority and then from GC head back via Death valley and Yosemite. Although you might want to consider places like Monument Valley, Lake Powell, Antelope canyon,Zion NP etc. While you were researching, did anything stand out to you? Sometimes just looking at a decent paper map can grab your attention to a certain place, or places and then you can start to see a route form.

Thanks for your response! This would be round trip in 10 days. After some research, I did start to notice that Yosemite - Death Valley - Las Vegas to GC seems to be a popular route and it seems like a pretty good one. Didn't consider Zion or the others you mentioned but now that you mention it, definitely something to consider. LA isn't a priority to us, as we live in the Bay Area and visit LA a lot.

    Default The North Rim.

If you are planning to Include Zion, etc., you may find that the North Rim is a better place to visit the Grand Canyon. The views are just as spectacular, if not more so. You will be 1000 feet higher and it is nowhere near as crowded nor as developed. Much easier to park and an excellent visitor centre with all the usual facilities.

No doubt you have seen all this on your maps... you will never get these details with the confines of a little screen.
