  1. Default Help Needed - Road Trip from Las Vegas to New Orleans ( 11 Days )

    Hi All,

Me and my partner are looking to do a small road trip from Las Vegas to New Orleans over a 11 day period starting in a few weeks. We would really appreciate some advice regarding routes and places to visit/stay along the way including hostels/campgrounds etc. We also would like to know any hidden costs regarding car hire.

    Many Thanks

    Default Over to you.

Hi, and Welcome to the Great American roadtrip Forum.

Eleven days is a nice bit of time for such a trip, but without knowing what you are looking for or what your interests are, it is hard to be specific.

Your best thing is to get out detailed maps of the States through which you will be travelling, and see what there is that would interest you along the way. Good maps such as those produced by AAA or Rand McNally have a wealth of information on them, - natural, historical, touristy, etc. They will also show the numerous routes available to you and which ones are scenic routes.

Hidden costs for car rentals, not always stated, include under-25-years-old fees, one-way drop off fees, insurance, tax, and anything you add on such as GPS and child car seats. Those are the "& up" included when you get a flashy ad that says "rent this car for $259/week & up". That quote is the car only and does not include those things that I mentioned.

Hi - Thanks for the reply, really appreciated!

We are pretty laid back and enjoy seeing natural attractions but won't hesitate to do a "touristy" sight if it is highly recommended. We are aiming to stop over at 4 destinations along the way for maybe 2-3 days each and would welcome any suggestions. We intended to use the I-40 E route to New Orleans.

    Hi Donna,

Thanks for the heads up - we have noticed many ads don't include these fees until pick-up which is annoying. Appreciate your help.

As has been said, you really need to look at a good map and do a little research, as with 11 days you can do quite a bit of wandering. I would consider first heading north into Utah and visit Zion and Bryce canyon, then the Grand canyon and Monument valley, perhaps Mesa Verde and Santa Fe but you also have options south lie Sedona, Tombstone White sands, Carlsbad caverns and the like. Once you have a few dots on the map a general route will start to form and then we can make meaningful suggestions.
