    Welcome to RTA!

It's a 3.5 day trip with overnights in Amarillo, Flagstaff, and Bakersfield.

    Default Your Mileage May Vary

The first coulple of overnight stops that glc gave you presume that you can cover 600 miles a day. This is right at the limit of what we recommend as safe for the casual driver, and is as much as the federal government will allow professional long-haul truckers to drive in a twenty four hour period. If you have never driven seriously long distances before, you should seriously consider driving a bit less, say 500 to 550 miles a day with several short breaks to let you clear your mind, get some exercise, and generally get your circulation going, muscles stretched, and mind refocused. Such a schedule would make your overnights closer to Mclean TX, Chetco AZ and Barstow CA. Note that that is a fairly short first day at 'only' 520 miles, but that leaves you time to get yourself packed and organized at home, and ease your way into being "On the Road".

To get a decent choice of hotels and stretch it out to 4 full days, I'd stretch the first day to Amarillo, second day to Holbrook AZ, and 3rd day to Barstow. Longest day will be the first one at 580 miles and should be able to be done in 10 hours.

Sounds reasonable. Will be traveling with two dogs so we will be taking breaks. Would love to drive this straight through though. Hate to try to find a hotel with two dogs. We can play it by ear and see how far we can actually travel. Appreciate your input!

There is absolutely no way you should attempt to do this trip straight through. Forget about computer generated drive times, this is a trip that can only be measured in days and not hours. You will need those 3 overnight stops so you should start looking for pet friendly hotels. You can find them using the RTA travel link on the right of the page. Safe journey.

As Dave said, You shouldn't even think about driving straight through, it would be beyond dangerous and reckless.

The problem with "seeing how far you can actually travel" is that you will be pushing yourself too far to be safe. By the time you feel tired, you have already driven way too far. Throw in the fact that you will be traveling with dogs, where you need to plan for more stops, where it is a bit more difficult to find a room, and you'll be traveling across areas where you'll be traveling long distances between options for places to stay, and you are really setting yourself up for a dangerous situation.

You need to plan for 3 overnight stops, and the place previously recommended are the absolute maximum distances you should even consider traveling in a day.

Great advice. I will use the hotel search function and research some good pet friendly hotels. Thanks Southwest Dave!
