Default Road Trip! Seattle to Phoenix to Michigan to New Jersey!

Hello all you roadtrip experts, I am looking for advice on where to stop, stay, and what to see on our road trip coming up in December. Family of five and a small dog....flying from Alaska to Seattle, driving from Seattle on 2 December to Phoenix...staying in Phoenix for some amount of time, continuing on toward Michigan, then on to our final destination, new home in New Jersey.

Where MUST we stop and what must we see? Looking to make a vacation of the trip so stopping and seeing as many things as possible would be great. National monuments? Weird, unique places? Where to eat? Stay? Kids are all ages...14, 9 and 3 so I'm sure they will be entertained by a number of things along the way. Should we drive down the coast to California on the way to Phoenix or another route? It will be December after all, so are there areas along the way we should avoid?

Thank you for any insight and recommendations!

    Welcome to RTA!

So....how long do you have to get from Seattle down to Phoenix? To go the 1400 miles via the "quickest route", you'd need at least 3 days. If you wanted to go down the coast of CA on CA-1 (PCH), it adds 240 miles but it also adds at least 2 days to drive between San Francisco and Los Angeles.

If you can give us a little more information about the length of time you have to travel between Seattle and Phoenix, we'll be able to give you more ideas. Also, if you're looking for info on going between Phnx, MI and NJ, we should have travel times there too.

(Sometimes folks want ideas for places to stop and then we find out that they barely have enough time to make the trip, and no extra time for sightseeing.)

Default They have to be your 'must see's'.

Hello and welcome to the RTA forums !

As Donna mentioned, the time available is critical in planning such a trip and time dissapears much quicker than a lot of people realise on the road. Although we can give you some ideas, it's for you decide what you must see and where you must stop. A roadtrip is a unique experience for each traveller and should be based on your interests of which we know nothing, we really don't do 'must see's' here. I would suggest you do some reading around the RTA site and open a good map and see what options there are along your route. Once you have found your own personal 'must see's' and have some dots on the map we can then help fill in the blanks and offer suggestions.

When you start to plan, be sure to involve the children in the planning and let them have their input, the trip will be far more rewarding for all if everyone has an interest. You might also get them some note pads so they can create a journal at the end of each day for a memory book.

DonnaR57, we aren't really on a timeline, just hoping to make it to Phoenix in maybe 4-5 days...but if we need more time to see things and make the trip worth it we are open to that as well! Same goes for the travel from Phoenix to Michigan...plan to leave Phoenix the weekend before Christmas so 19 or 20th of December...take 3-4 days, or more if we need to. From MI to NJ we wanted to stop minimal times, but ultimately end up in NJ after 2-3 days max trip from Michigan. Thank you!

As stated, you need at least three days, so if you have four or five, that will give you some time to see somethings. However, if you are wanting to drive the PCH, all your time is already taken.

Alternatively, you could cross over to Tahoe and take 395 to Lone Pine and cut across Death Valley. December is a lovely time to visit Death Valley, and take some of the short hikes. It is a wonderful park with many attractions, most of which are just too difficult to spend worthwhile time at in the heat of summer..

You do not say how old the children are. Are they old enough to do a little of the research for you... perhaps for places they would like to see. If they are still very young, and confined to child car seats, you may like to allow a little extra time to make more frequent stops and give them some time to stretch their legs and burn off pent up energy. Most places have a town or city park with a playground or an old train or similar item for children to explore.

From MI to NJ you have quite a few routes you could take through beautiful PA. However, other than I-80, they all take a little more than 2-3 days to enjoy. Guess later on much of that would make nice short trips out of NJ.
