  1. Default Los Angeles, CA to St. George, UT to Fort Collins, CO

    Greetings all.

Looking for tips/advice as we plan our family road trip. Leaving L.A. first week of August, stopping in St. George then on to Fort Collins.
Appreciate suggestions for family friendly spots, great things to see etc.

    Many thanks!

    Welcome to the RTA Forum!

The route you are looking at is one of the most spectacular drives in the country. There are more than a half dozen National Parks easily reachable from the Interstates and the I-70 across Utah and Colorado is considered by many to be one of the most scenic freeways in the world.

Having said that - you really need to rethink your plans if you are planning to get from St. George to Ft. Collins in 1 day. That is a 700 mile drive which is well beyond what professional drivers are allowed to do in a day and is well beyond what is safe or reasonable for a family trip. Such a drive is going to take you a good 14 hours with minimum stops and you would have zero opportunity to take in any of the many family friendly spots and great things to see. LA to Fort Collins is a full 2 day drive before extra stops where you should really be trying to get to Richfield Utah on day one.

Default How much time for the drive ?

I'm not sure if you are planning on getting to Fort Collins in 2 days or over the course of the week ?

If it's the former you won't really have much time for detours and sight seeing other than taking rest breaks in scenic spots. To do the trip in 2 days you would have to get to Richfield or close by on day 1. If it's the latter then you have numerous options, including Zion and Bryce canyon from where you could travel scenic 12 and UT24 to Capitol Reef NP and perhaps Arches and Canyonlands NP's near Moab. Off I70 you will find the likes of the Colorado National monument and a very scenic drive on US6 over the continental divide at Loveland pass. You could round the trip off with a drive through Rocky mountain NP.
