  1. Default how to rent a 12 people van from Italy?

    Hello to all
My name is Matthew and I write from Italy, so I apologize for my not perfect English.

I organized a trip for this summer from Chicago to Los Angeles along Route 66, and i'm with 7 other people.
We have already chosen the various stages and the city, but we cannot rent a van with 12 seats from italy (we need a big one, for suitcases).
A few years ago for a similar trip but from New York to Niagara Falls luckily I found a van at the airport (even then it was impossible to find from Italy) but this time I'd like to reserve in advance.
Do you have any advice to rent this van?
Do you believe that it is easy to find at the airport in Chicago someone who rents a van to me in los angeles?
Otherwise we will travel on two different cars.

    Thanks

Default Better with 2 vehicles perhaps ?

Hello and welcome to the RTA forums !

I think you would be extremely lucky to find a vehicle like this at the airport and especially for a one way trip across the country. I would actually ask yourselves whether renting 2 smaller vehicles would be a better choice. It would be more comfortable seating, would give you a chance to swap travel companions along the way, so any clashes of personality can take a break from each other. Arguably it could also work out cheaper, plus if people want to do different things on the same day, it would give 2 choices instead of one by splitting up. A quick search for 'Passenger vans' in Chicago brought up a few results that you could chase. This company had a Mercedes Sprinter thats seats 9 or 12 but I do not know if they do one way drop offs or anything else about them, but you could mail them. They DO have depots both in Chicago and LA.

Enterprise rents 15 passenger vans, but they are usually "sold out", check your dates on their website.

    Default Check these out.

Here are some options to follow up found right here in the RTA travel centre !

On the left hand side you will see options of available vehicles, click on the 'Vans' box.

    First, thank you all!

the reason why we would like to travel all together, besides the fact that we have done this thing in the past (we plan in advance all the stages) is that I will be traveling with my family and with the family of one of my college friend.
our mothers do not drive, all children are under 25 years, so with two cars we should pay the extra fee, or should always drive my father.
With a van would be just the two fathers instead to alternate, so a driver is always rested.
We would choose two cars only if there were no alternatives.

I'll try to contact both the bandago the enterprise; I checked RTA travel center and there is nothing available with more than 7 seats.

Do you think I might have more chances dividing the trip into two pieces? For example, renting a van from chicago to santa fe, and then another van from santa fe to los angeles.

No, dividing the trip will result in two one-way dropoff fees.

    Default Check again.

I checked RTA travel center and there is nothing available with more than 7 seats.
Did you click on the 'Van' link to the left of the page as I suggested ? I see a 12 seater Chevy express and a Ford econoline 12 seater for around $1000 per week. Here and here.

Dave, you searched for pickup AND return at ORD, I believe this person wants to return it at LAX. I changed the search accordingly and there's nothing bigger than a Dodge Grand Caravan.

    Default One way issue.

Yes, I just done a quick search to see what was available George, it would appear that the one way drop off is an issue with these being more of a 'Specialist' rental. Nice work, Thanks.

    Default 12 seater vans.

Not sure if this has been resolved. When I was searching for a rental I noticed that there was a 12 seat van available. So I put in ORD to LAX and sure enough, there are 12 seater vans available for these pick up and drop off locations.
