    Welcome to RTA!

I drove that route a few years ago and it was a very pleasant drive. Traffic was very light, and there are enough towns where you can stop and rest. However, I would advise you to top off your gas tank in Oakley on general principles.

There are at least 3 stations in the area -- a Phillips 66, a Casey's, and a TA Truck Stop. There may be a few a little more off I-70.

Completed the trip as per the plan. From oakley took the US-40.. There are motels, gas stations along the way from oakley until kit carson, where you join US-287. Once you turn into Co-94 there is absolutely nothing until Yoder which is about 60 miles from US-40/CO-94 junction. The views and scenery along this road was awesome. All in all a enjoyable ride rather than taking I-70.

As are so many of these old highways, throughout the country. But for their speed, they mostly outweigh the interstates. I recall taking US287 from Lamar to Limon, and even though services were sparce, the drive was magnificent.

    (Long ago thread I know...)
So you take I-70 from whatever point east in Kansas then switch to the 40 at Oakley?

    Default Unforgetable.

Yes, it is a while ago, but I recall it well. US-400 across Kansas gave me a great insight into agriculture in that area, especially the beef feeding lots. It makes a great trip to learn where the food on the table comes from, how the animals are treated, and crops are grown. A showcase of the hard work that agriculture is.

Thanks! I'm in Lawrence now getting ready to head out. Glad to know of a more scenic route to our Colorado Springs destination.
