    Default 'Best' for what?

Hi Kaul, and Welcome to the Great American Roadtrip Forum.

Every road trip is a unique road trip, depending on what the participants desire. The 'best' trip means different things to different people. Are you looking for the fastest trip, the most scenic, or, since you mention your four wheel drive vehicles, a trip on backroads and unmade tracks?

Give us a little more information as to what you are looking for, what the interest is of the members of your travelling party, and the experts here will be able to give you relevant information.

    Default What's Your Pleasure?

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

If you've read any of the many recommendations give in these forums, you will no doubt know that there is never a single 'best' route or unique collection of ',must see' venues for any RoadTrip. Such designations are only applicable for a single individual's interests and tastes. And you've told us nothing or yours. Very generally you might want to just get up the coast a ways, past the industrialized Connecticut cities. East of New Haven the coast opens up a bit with state parks such as Hammonasset, Rocky Neck, Harkness Memorial, and Bluff Point. US-1 is the major route in this section of New England, and besides the coastal parks, you might want to check out Mystic Seaport or the Submarine Force Museum in Groton. A bit inland, most people will think of their casino but the Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center in Mashantucket, CT is what's really worth the trip. In Rhode Island be sure to visit Newport and just offshore, reachable by ferry from either Connecticut or Rhode Island is Block Island.

I am looking for a bit of everything , maybe a good see side drive, forest drive , some light houses and some must sees on the way. If you could let me know the best drive , covering a bit of those with a couple of nights on the way. Thanks

Default US-1 East of New Haven

As I noted in my initial response, you'll have to get at least east of New Haven before the coast starts opening up to scenic seaside drives. But after that US-1 is your main road of choice. There will be roads closer to the shore, such as CT-146 between Branford and Madison, and CT-156 between Old Lyme and New London, but US-1 is what ties them together. In Rhode Island, you'd use RI-138 to cross Narragansett Bay into Newport. If that route has satiated your appetite for seashore driving, then you can try for some more forested routes o the way back such as CT-85/CT-82/CT-148/CT-145/CT-80 from New London to New Haven. That route has the added advantage that you would cross the Connecticut River via the oldest continuously operating ferry in the US between Hadlyme and Chester.

    Default Information on maps.

There appear to be at least 21 lighthouses in CT alone. I have never been to any of them, but I am sure when you look at your map - I take it you are planning this with good paper maps - you will see the points where they will be.
