  1. Default Sacramento,CA to Corvalis, MT

Planning a summer road trip from Sacramento, CA to Corvalis, MT. Am trying to keep the trip there and back to 8 days total, with 2-3 spent in Montana visiting. This leaves five days of drive time. Any tips on the best route, sights to see, laces to stay along the way?

    Welcome to RTA!

At 950 miles, this is about a 2-day drive each direction by the fastest route. What types of things interest you (for sights to see)? I see that Lake Tahoe isn't that far, , Craters of the Moon National Monument, Sawtooth NRA, and so much more are right along a route that would still be fairly direct. But if you are going to take 5 days to do the round trip, and the drive is 4 days round trip by the most direct routes, it only gives you an extra day. One of the more direct routes takes you east on I-80 and well into Nevada before turning north on US-93. That takes you close to Craters of the Moon in Idaho, and right by the eastern side of the Sawtooths.

Where to spend the night -- well, that too will depend on what you want to see on the way up or back. For direct runs, we recommend 500-600 miles a day. With just 950 miles, you could drive 475 miles per day.

    Default Two for You

If this is to be a round trip, why limit yourself to one supposedly 'best' route there and back. Why not instead take two very good routes: one up and a different one back. The fastest route would be via I-80 across Nevada to US-93 north through Idaho to Corvalis. Sites worth considering along that route would include Virginia City, Bruneau Canyon, Bruneau Sand Dunes, Craters of the Moon National Monument, and Sawtooth National Recreation Area.

Perhaps a more scenic route on the way back would have you continuing north on US-93 a bit from Corvalis to Lolo MT and taking US-12 west over Lolo Pass to Kooskia ID and using ID-13 to connect with US-95 south to Ontario ID and US-20 west. At Riley OR, get on US-395 south to Alturas CA and from there CA-299 will take you to I-5 at Redding. Sites worth considering along that route would include Nez Perce National Historic Park, Whiskeytown and Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Areas, and Lassen Volcanic National Park.

    Default Twin Falls.

If you wanted to get a BIG first day under your belt you could make it to Twin Falls for the night, even if not it's worth considering a stop for Perrine bridge and the Snake River canyon and and nearby you will find Shoshone Falls aka The Niagara of the west. It would also allow you a nice amount of time to visit the previously mentioned Craters of the Moon the following day.
