  1. Default 22day rv road trip

    22 day Road trip in a RV across America and need some advice?
    My partner and I are planning to travel across America in a Class c rv. The planned time of year will be around august/September in 2015.

    Over 22 days
    Our planned travel destinations are as follows;

    Start in San Fran > LA > San Diego > Vegas > Albuquerque > Dallas > Memphis > Panama City beach > Miami > savannah > Raleigh > Washington, D.C. > finish in New York.

    The itinerary is subject to change (we don't know if we are going to go to a few aces such as Miami)

    What are your thoughts on this and do you think it is possible or not?

    Default Goals and Transport choice.

    Hello and welcome to the RTA forums !

    Your trip is certainly possible and in an RV you will be looking at close to 10 days of dedicated driving because of the slower pace and the number of City's you will be working your way in and out of.

    My other initial thought is why an RV ? [ I would like to note that I love to travel by RV in the States.] Not only will the RV be a lot more expensive than a car and motels by the time you add mileage charges, campground fees and high fuel consumption to the initial rental cost, it's also not the type of vehicle you would choose to drive through and stay in a City with. Sure some City's have RV parks [mostly expensive] and occasionally it works out with location, but your trip seems to be laid out exclusively for the City.

    I think you need to think about what your goals are for the trip other than just trying to cross the country as it's a big place and 3 weeks will soon disappear. With 10 days of driving and 13 destinations you won't average just 1 day in each location, so you can imagine the knock on effect of having 2 days in each of SF, LA, Vegas, Washington and New York to see the sights. Is it worth going to SD and Miami for what might amount to half a day ?

    Default What about the National Parks?

    You don't say where you are from. Hence you may not realise that you will be passing by some of the greatest natural wonders of the world. Have you thought of visiting any of these? Grand Canyon, Pacific Coast Highway, Yosemite, Death Valley, to name just a few. An RV comes into its own, in these natural surroundings.

    Besides driving 'across America', what are your goals for this trip? What are you hoping to get out of it? After a while, all cities start to look the same.

    It is entirely possible, although, as other stated, you might be spending a lot of time on the road. To me, this certainly would not be a hassle, as I enjoy travelling at a fast pace, but it might be a hassle to other people who enjoy travelling at a slower pace. The benefit of it is that your batteries are always fully charged (if your RV battery is plugged on your alternator). As for the costs, well few RV have low gas mileage, that is a fact, but you can save on campgroud fees by staying at alternative unofficial locations. These require research and time. We are typically spending 30 minutes to up to 2-3 hours to find the right spot. Bigger East Coast cities (such as NYC) might be a little tricky to navigate. In that case, it might be easier to park in the outskirts of the city and use public transportation to get into the downtown area.

    Have fun!
