  1. Default Austin to Atlanta

Hi there, I am looking at doing a 2 week road trip from Austin. I think a good place to finish would be Atlanta but open to suggestions. Anyone done this route and have good suggestions for stop offs/things to see along the way? Thinking live music, fun, great food (think man vs food!) and amazing scenery.

    Any hints and tips welcome.

Welcome Back to the RTA Forum! Did you ever do the trip you proposed a few years ago? If not, it wouldn't hurt to review what was posted there.

Keep in mind, doing a loop is likely to be significantly less expensive, especially when it comes to car rental.

Some other cities that certainly come to mind that fit your goals would include New Orleans, Memphis, and Nashville. You might also look at Dallas/Fort Worth, San Antonio, and Houston, places along the gulf coast like Biloxi Mississippi and Panama City Florida, or even perhaps the Atlantic Coast, with cities like Savannah or Charleston coming to mind.

    Default One Fun Loop

I'm assuming that this will be a round trip to Atlanta and back in which case you should make the most of your time on the road by taking different routes out and back - a loop. One such loop would go roughly Shreveport, Jackson, Birmingham, Atlanta - and then Montgomery, Mobile, New Orleans, Houston, Austin. Of course you can do it in the opposite direction if you are of a mind.

For live music and general 'fun', you'd be hard pressed to find a better location than New Orleans, but for sure consider including some stops in SEC towns such as Baton Rouge, Tuscaloosa, and Auburn. For some other unique spots, check out the Creole Nature Trail in southeastern Louisiana, the Bonnie and Clyde shoot-out site and museums in Gibsland LA, the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site in the Alabama town of the same name, and Gulf Islands National Seashore with sections in both Florida and Mississippi. Those should be enough to give your planning a kick start.

    Hi Sunshinetats,

Here are some tips for the Atlanta part of your trip:

If you're a coffee fan, head to Aurora coffee in Little Five Points. They have the best cappuccino in the world. For live music, try out Eddie's Attic in Decatur or Elliot Street Pub in Castleberry Hill. The Flying Biscuit in Midtown is a great and cheap Southern cuisine restaurant with a twist. Little Five Points is a great neighborhood to meet cool people.
