  1. Default Road trip from San Jose, CA to Grand Canyon , AZ with two boys

We are planning a road trip for Thanks Giving break from San Jose, CA to Grand Canyon, AZ. We have about 9 days to spend and would like to stay on the way for couple of nights. What is the best route and places to stay on the way? Kids love relaxing trip and are old enough (11 & 15) to sit in the car long enough between the stops. Any suggestions?

    Welcome to the RTA Forum!

As you look around this forum, you'll see there never is a single best to a question like this, rather a whole lot of options, depending upon your tastes.

If it is open, you could look at going through Yosemite and Death Valley and onto Vegas - although keep in mind, by the end of November, Tioga Pass is typically closed for the season, and that may not be an option. If it is closed, you'll have to take the more direct route via Bakersfield, or cross the Sierras near Lake Tahoe. Some of your other options along the way would include taking the coast highway or stopping in Sequoia. As you get closer to the Grand Canyon, you have lots of other options like Route 66, Sedona, or the National Parks of Utah, like Zion and Bryce Canyon.

It really just falls on you and what your family is interested in.

Presumably this will be a round trip ? If so you should look to taking a different route out and back as to see new things. Michael has given you plenty to think about but the links in this thread will come in handy as well as searching the forums. You need to work out how much time you plan to spend at the canyon and how much driving you are prepared to do and work from there, as Michael mentioned, their is no single 'best' as the road trip is a very individual thing and that's what makes them so good !

Once you have worked out the basics we can help to 'fine tune' your plans and offer suggestions. Get the whole family involved in the planning so that each and everyone has a vested interest in the trip, it'll make it a lot more enjoyable.
