Default Rate my California, Navada Road trip.

    Hello everyone.

So I am going on a 18 day road trip to California this October with my girlfriend I have booked what I think is a fantastic trip and I just wanted to know what you thought and if you can provide any tips on some of the attractions we plan on visiting or any recommendations for places to visit etc...

Day 1 : Fly into San Francisco from the UK, we arrive at approximately 1:30pm giving us plenty of time to get through arrivals and to our hotel

We figured we would just get out bearings and mooch about for a bit, Maybe go out for some nice dinner and shopping to celebrate our arrival and the start of our road trip.

Day 2: We plan on spending the day at fisherman's wharf, pier 39 and Alcatraz

I would also like to explore Chinatown in the evening.

Day 3: Twin peaks, Golden gate bridge and Park and California Academy of Sciences looks interesting. Anything else we should squeeze in?

Day 4: Early start, pick up the hire car and head straight to Yosemite Valley. We are staying in Curry Village, We plan on spending this whole day exploring the valley.

Day 5: Another day in Yosemite. This time exploring some of the other regions like glacier point etc...

Day 6: Very early start as we are heading to Furnace Creek resort in Death valley, Long drive! but we are going to take out time and explore some of the stops on the way, Tioga Road, Mammoth Lakes, June lake loop to name a few. Before exploring death valley.

Day 7: Heading to Vegas for a night in MGM grand. We have out eye on the Cirque du Soleil Shows, possibly the Michael Jackson: ONE at Mandalay Bay. I have not done much research on Vegas just yet but will be looking for some nice mid budget places to eat and I have been told I need to experience a vegas buffet! Not sure which one though!

Day 8: We head to Grand canyon National park for the day. We are spending the whole day there so plan to see some amazing sites. We have a room booked just outside the park in Tusayan and ideally we would love to see the sunset/sunrise before moving on.

Day 9 and 10: Back to Vegas this time staying at the Monte Carlo, Plans to see another show, possibly Cirque Du Soleil Zumanity and spend some time in the casinos with dreams of hitting the Jackpot!

Day 11: Drive to LA early morning. We have an apartment booked in West Hollywood. I feel a nice relaxing day, maybe a trip to the beach

Day 12: I think this day shall be dubbed Universal Day, we are buying tickets to the Universal Studios tour and then plan on spending the day in the park. We are also very tempted by the Halloween Horror night, as we are suckers for all things scary and LOVED the one in Florida. Plus one of the themes is Walking Dead! which is one of my favourite shows.

Day 13: Explore LA as much as possible, Walk of Fame, Hollywood sign etc... Not sure what else to do here. I guess we could find some nice shops

Day 14: Drive to Cambria, we plan on a few stops between, we would like to pop into Santa Barbara. Pismo beach, Morro Bay and see Hearst Castle and the elephant seal rookery?

Day 15: We plan on spending the whole day exploring Big Sur, The only things we know we want to do for sure are the MCway Falls, and eat lunch at the Nepenthe, We have 1 night booked in a cabin

Day 16: Explore Pt Lobos, China Cove, Carmel before heading into Monterey,

Day 17: Explore Monterey, Cannery Row and the aquarium spring to mind.

Day 18: leisurely drive back to San Francisco international for our flights home.

How does that all sound? Anything you would squeeze into the trip? Am I missing any Must sees?

    Thanks for reading!

    Welcome to the RTA Forum!

I think you've got an excellent, well thought out trip.

There is really only one area where I would suggest a change. Vegas to the Grand Canyon is about 5 hours of driving, so you'll spend about half the day driving there. Since you're planning to spend the night, that's not a big deal, but then it is a bit out of the way to double back to Vegas.

It would save you a couple hours of driving to do all of your exploring in Vegas in one shot, then go to GC, and then drive directly to Los Angeles. GC to LA can be done in one long, but not unreasonable, day.

Otherwise, I don't have much else to add. Make sure you book your Alactraz trip in advance, as there is limited availability. I'm guessing you'd want to book your Vegas shows in advance too, but there's probably a little more flexibility there.

    Default A couple more comments.

Just a couple of comments on top of Michael's assessment. Keep your eyes on the status of Tioga Pass, in case of an early winter storm. In SF, consider the evening tour of Alcatraz. It is fantastic, as well as watching the lights come on all over SF and watching the sun sink into the Pacific beyond the Golden Gate Bridge.

When my daughter was in SF, she and her boyfriend hired bicycles, took the ferry to the northern end of the bridge, and cycled back to down town. That was in 2001, but I would imagine you could still do that today.

You should also prebook your Hearst Castle tour. Space is somewhat limited.
