if you are interested in a taking a detour, making your trip a bit longer, and camping and activities there's Staunton river State park. Plus it has the largest lake in virginia.

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

The easiest way to make a RoadTrip interesting is to take the little bit of extra time it (sometimes) takes to go by the 'back' roads. In your particular case, these roads, US-158/US-29/US-360 through Danville and South Boston, are both scenic and result in you having to drive 20 fewer miles. They will, however, take slightly longer to drive, but if you're looking for things to do other than just get to your destination in the shortest time possible, they should work for you. Along those roads you'll find sites and attractions such as the American Armoured Foundation Tank Museum, Staunton River Battlefield State Park, Twin Lakes State Park, and others - depending on your interests.
