    Default Retirement Grand Tour

    Hi,
    I just re-joined RTA. I have submitted several Funny Signs over the years, a few which were published in their book.

    Round worms alla carbonara

    Dogs Need Not Apply

    Hot Beer, Lousy Food

    As a teacher I have been able to take 6-8 week trips over the summer. My retired husband would also take a 3 week Fall trip and kept raving about Fall travel. I retired in May, we took our usual 6 week trip this summer. We have been to all 50 states so some of this will be re-visits and some will be new! This trip should allow my husband to realize a goal of visiting all National Park Sevice sites in the lower 48 (next year for me).

    Today we are beginning my retirement trip- The Grand Tour 2013. A general itinerary;
    Arizona to;
    W. edge of Sierras-Sequoia & Kings Canyon Np, Yosemite NP
    Pinnacles NP
    Placerville, Ca - family
    S. Lake Tahoe - MS Walk
    I-80 East, then US 20 across Nebraska
    Albion, Il - family
    Ohio, Mi back to Ohio for NPS sites
    I-80 to Steamtown NHS
    North to Maine
    Cape Cod - letterboxing gathering
    Then down the East Coast to the Florida Keys.
    Heading back along I-10 corridor to AZ by Thanksgiving

    Lots of stops for National Park Sites, Smashed pennies, Letterboxes, and of course regional food.

    I think I am tired already! But ready for the adventure!

    More to come,
    -Pat

    Pat, nice to see you back here. How long are you allowing for this amazing trip?

    Today, Sept 7 up to Thanksgiving. No set date to return, except by Thanksgiving. May depend on day trip to Dry Tortugas NP. Last time we tried the boat trip was cancelled due to high waves. We didn't have time to stick around for a better day. This time we are committed to staying until we get out there.
    Plus lots of other factors along the way.

    Oh, I see. I missed it the first few times I read this. So, will you be reporting in from the road?

    That would be cool.

    Default And your "Trail Name" is....?

    So... what is your "trail name" for your letterboxing?

    I had never heard of this practice before. Are you an experienced letterboxer or is this a new pursuit for you?

    That's quite a few. I have not got beyond 27. But then, I only count them in places like supermarket car parks.

    DesertFlower-

    active for 8 years, with almost 1000 finds. Hubby is Azroadie. He started first, has been retired 10 years with many more finds and plants. A great road trip activity- some are drive-bys off major roads, others are hikes in beautiful places. Can be done on your own or attend a gathering for a day or several days.

    Started in England over 100 years ago. Became popular in America in the late 90s after an article in Smithsonian and easier access to the Internet. A great way to break up a long drive!

    Our goal is to see all 50 plus DC by the end of each trip. We keep a map on a clipboard and highlight states as we see them. We have several 'rules' that have developed over the years, which are subject to change- at any time. On this trip we should see all 50 + 1. Have only picked up 2 new ones since the earlier report. It seems AZ is truly a crossroads- we always see a large diversity of plates before we leave the state.
    Anything to keep the trip interesting!
