Default Honeymoon - New York to LA Road Trip for Irish couple

I'm from Wexford, Ireland and am looking into doing a roadtrip from New York to LA for about sixteen days next September (2014)
We want to go to Nashville, Memphis and Las Vages but apart from that we are looking for ideas. We love country music, the countryside and want to get to know more about America.
I love America and am so excited about taking this trip... I want the honeymoon of a lifetime so any ideas would be useful.
Thanks so much for all your help.

Céad Míle Fáilte! Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

First: Congratulations on your upcoming nuptials. I'd also say you've made the first steps in planning your honeymoon absolutely correctly - setting up an adventure and leaving yourselves time for both that adventure and to just relax. Two weeks is nearly a perfect amount of time for a cross-country, sight-seeing RoadTrip. Now, rather than bog you down in details right off the bat, I'm just going to offer some general suggestions for routes and major sites which you/we can fine tune as you get a better idea of what's available to you.

For starters, since you already have several cities on your agenda, I'd recommend that you when you leave New York you get off the crowded eastern seaboard as quickly as possible, heading west on I-78 to I-81 south. That will get you into the Great Valley and Blue Ridge area where you can begin to relax. In particular, consider Shenandoah National Park, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and towns like Lexington VA. Get as far south as Asheville NC, then turn west through Great Smokey Mountains National Park to Nashville. In Nashville, be sure to check out the Grand Ole Opry, while in Memphis the sites of choice will be Beale Street and Sun Studios.

Once you cross the Mississippi you will be in an entirely different section of the country. Oklahoma was, up until a little over a century ago, officially known as "Indian Territory" and it still has a rich tradition of both cowboys and Indians. New Mexico has a rich Spanish tradition as well as Native Americans living much as their ancestors did. I'd also urge you to consider heading up into southwestern Colorado at this point and check out the four corners area for its history and scenery. Then, absolutely, head across northern Arizona to take in one of the natural wonders of the world.

Finally, in Los Angeles, you'll want to check out the beaches. Look at Santa Monica, Venice, Malibu, and Newport to get a sense of what's available. There's also Hollywood, Disneyland, and a host of other possibilities. But I have to remind myself that I promised we wouldn't get bogged down in details just yet.

If you enjoy country music make sure you include Austin, Tx on your route. My hometown, Tucson, AZ, also has a great music scene. Some country, bluegrass, blues and lots more plus plenty to see and great places to eat. A must-do is the Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum on the west side of Tucson.

Are you driving one way and flying out from the west coast?

Or driving both ways? Driving both ways will be 10 days of interstate driving. Not leaving much time for seeing things.

How long do you plan on staying in your arrival and departure cities?

Thanks so much for all your replies.... Just booked the wedding yesterday so am excited now to plan the honeymoon.
We plan to stay in New York for the wedding for three days and then rent a car and drive through the country to finish in LA. We plan to stay in LA for two days... so we have about sixteen days to drive and see the country.

Thank you so much for all your help in planning our dream honeymoon.
