  1. Default West coast road trip

    Hi all,

I'm at very early stages of looking into this trip and was wondering if anyone can send some links to pre-made maps from users that have already done this type of trip.

    Ok...

I'm a Pro photographer and will be looking for great US scenery but with alot of people interaction too.

SO I'm thinking a trip 2 - 3 weeks long. Los angeles to San fran with lots inbetween.

I hope this is a good start haha

    Thanks

    Paul

    Welcome to the RTA Forum!

We really don't believe in "premade" trips here. Each roadtrip is unique, and it should be treated as such. Your trip should be based on What you are interested in, what you want to see, and the amount of time you want to have to see it.

Having said that, it is always worthwhile to look at what others have done to get ideas. A loop covering LA-Vegas-San Francisco, usually over 2-3 weeks, is about the most popular, and most discussed outline on this forum. Here are a few of our favorites to help you get started. Also play around the the Map Center, and the search functions to get more ideas.

As you have more questions, feel free to ask.

Been given a trip to work from,

Any feedback please would be great, i am going to be on my own on this trip !!!

Fly to Vegas (1 night if you arrive late to visit casinos - if not drive straight to Grand Canyon)

Grand Canyon (one night - drive out at sunset)

Glen Canyon, AZ (Antelope Canyon in the morning or go straight to Zion NP in UT)

    Zion NP (1 Night)

Bryce Canyon (1 day - drive to LV at night)

Next morning, drive to SF (2 nights)

    Yosemite (3-4 days)

Optional - Napa Valley - wine tours (1 day)

Monterey and Aquarium - 1 day (its cheaper to stay in Salinas - 20 miles away)

Big Sur National Park - (1 day)

Drive to Los Angeles 5 hrs (stay for 1-1/2 days)

San Diego, CA (2-4 days) - See the Zoo, Old Town, Gaslight District, Balboa Park, Beaches

    Las Vegas, VA (fly out)

I would like to see maybe some night life too while im in the US.

    Thanks

    Paul

    Default out of order

A couple thoughts with your plan.

If you're arriving in Vegas off an International Flight, you should plan to spend at least one night there to get adjusted and rest up after your flight, no matter what time of day you arrive. Plus, if you're looking for nightlife while on your trip, you'll be hard pressed to find a better spot than Vegas.

I'm not real clear on your Grand Canyon plan, but I would recommend staying overnight at least one night here. You mention "drive out at sunset" but if you're heading off to Glen Canyon (I'm guessing you're thinking Page for an overnight?) that's a getting close to a 4 hour drive and more than you'd want to really do after dark. You'd also probably want to do Bryce Canyon before you do Zion.

The biggest thing that's out of place is San Francisco, since you'd be driving past Yosemite to get there. It would make much more sense to go to Yosemite first, then Napa, and then SF before heading down the coast.

    Default Your almost there.

With the tweeks Michael suggested you have a pretty good itinerary and are in for a fantastic time, you won't be able to put the camera down !!

So to summarise, stay over in Vegas on arrival and head to the GC next day and stay the night in, or nearby to the park. There is Cameron Trading post just out of the east entrance which is a possibility, but if your budget can manage it stay at GC vilage. You can then go to Glen canyon, Bryce and then Zion. From Zion NP you could go to Death Valley for an overnight [which has an amazing Landscape] and then up 395 through Bishop to Mono Lake and into Yosemite over the spectacular Tioga Pass. [CA120] then on to SF and follow your plans.

OK I think I'm getting somewhere.

    - Vegas
    - Grand canyon
    -'Bryce
    - Zion
    - Death valley
    - 395 through bishop to mono lake to yosimite over Tioga pass
    - San Fran
    - Big sir
    - LA
    - Vegas

If there is anything strange in there let me know and also I have no idea on how long to stay in each area so some help with that will be great.

    Thanks

    Default Time.

How much time you spend 'where', will depend on what appeals to you the most and how much of it you actually have. Do you know if it's likely to be 2 or 3 weeks and will that be time on the road, or will it include 2 International flights and a bit of jet lag ?

Potential problem with itinerary. I have just noticed this is in the 'Spring' road trip section, when are you planning to travel ? The Tioga Pass into Yosemite crosses the Sierra Nevada and can be closed due to winter snow accumulation into June, typically opening sometime during May. There is no way of knowing when this will happen until it's almost time. It's not a huge problem as you can go south around the mountains via Lake Isabella, but you will have to leave this section open to change and keep up to date with conditions. Although if you are planning on travelling in April, [or before] then it's unlikely to be open. If so, the bonus is you could visit Sequoia NP on the way up to Yosemite which is on the west side of the mountains.

I think I'll be waiting until may.

Also I plan to land on the 1st may and start trip with a night or 2 in Vegas.

That will be in the window of opportunity, but at this point will be 50/50 as to whether it is open or not.
