Default Denver - Salt lake - San Fran - LA - Tijuana - Vegas - Denver, 23 days

    Hi everybody,

Me and another lad have got 23 day's in August to do as much as possible, been foraging around for a similar route on the thread's, found bit's and bat's and hoping to pinch a few people's idea's, so far I'm going to go and visit the Grand Canyon, Casino's (Vegas), Alcatraz, Yosmite national park, Universal studio's, Hollywood, Golden Gate bridge.

I was just hoping for a few suggestion's of places to visit from people who have done a similar route before, with a first hand account being better than something you've read in a book. It's going to be quite a mixed up trip, half spent on campsite's snuggling up with the bear's under the stars, the other in hotel's hoping to mix up out door activities like kayaking etc with places like Vegas where you can get a few drink's and go clubbing.

What's the atmosphere like on campsite's? Do they generally have shower facilities and the biggest quezzie what factor suncream do california girl's use to get sun kissed skin?

    Default A few ideas.

Hello and welcome to the RTA forums !

There are thousands of possible locations on such a trip and much will come down to what interests you and fits within the time you have. I'd say that SLC is a little out of the way unless you really want to go there for a particular reason.

I would consider heading through into Southern Utah and visiting the National parks of Arches, Canyonlands, Bryce canyon and Zion where in between you will find some great driving roads and towns. From Zion you could head to Vegas and then cut across Death valley and then visit Yosemite NP on the way to San Fran and the coast. Next you could spend time driving the spectacular coast around Big Sur towards LA which would mean at least one overnight stop on route.

From LA head for the south rim of the Grand canyon and then up through Monument valley towards Cortez and Durango where you will find the historic ruins of Mesa Verde NP nearby.
From Durango you could visit the mountain towns of Silverton and Ouray up the spectacular 'Million dollar Highway' [US550] before heading east on US50 from Montrose. That'll take you past Black canyon, through Currecanti Rec area and over the continental divide at Monarch pass before makng your way back to Denver. Not forgetting Rocky mountain NP near Denver of course.

The NP's are great for good value camping in amazing surroundings, but they do get booked up. You can't just set up camp where you please mind.

Tijuana is not somewhere we would recommend at the mo what with the drug cartel wars going on. You won't be able to cross the border in a rental car either.

These are just a few of the possibilities but they link up well and the drive will be spectacular !

[Sorry no expert on suncream !] ;-)

I'm not sure this is exactly the answer you're trying to find. Many people love the distinctive fragrance of Coppertone. Fair skinned and outdoor activities usually mean a sweatproof (sports) sunscreen of at least SPF 30.

Maybe I'm just missing your attempt at humor, but the situation in Tijuana is really not something to joke about. It is one of the most violent and dangerous cities in the world. Thing have slowly been getting better, but there is still a long way to go before it is a place that is friendly for tourism. It is certainly not a trip you should take lightly.
